“Zollverein Coal Mine in Ruhr region of Germany, where the first videos of The Humping Pact were filmed, has a very interesting history. After the second World War it was the largest industrial center of that kind in Europe, but in 1986 it was closed and declared a memorial. In 2001 the whole former mine was declared to be UNESCO World Heritage Sight.

Since the closure of the mines there have been numerous debates on the local and national level about the future of the region. How to bring in the new potential, resuscitate the area around, and make it more attractive for the cultural and business activities.
Depuis la fermeture des mines, de nombreuses discussions au niveau local et national ont eu lieu sur l’avenir de la région. Comment apporter un nouveau souffle au site et réanimer la région afin de la rendre plus attrayante aux activités culturelles et économiques?
In this regard, Paragullo’s act of humping and loving the space is a direct response to this discourse. They believe that the environment can be saved and revitalized through building a very personal and intimate relation to it. By harnessing the immense sexual energy inherent in every human being and channeling its creative potential into the strong and beautiful man-made geometrical structures, they offer their tribute to history, to architecture, to technology, to art, to science, and to the region and its people.
This collective action of humping transcends the intended use of the space, fertilizing it with dedication and belief – the universal currency of transformation and change.
À ce propos, l’acte de « Paragulo » (Diego Agullo et Dmitry Paranyushkindu) « d’aimer et de baiser l’espace » est une réponse directe à ce discours. Ils pensent que l’environnement peut être sauvé et revitalisé grâce à la mise en place d’une relation très personnelle et intime avec le lieu. En exploitant l’énergie sexuelle immense inhérente à chaque être humain et en canalisant son potentiel créatif dans de fortes et belles structures géométriques artificielles, ils rendent hommage à l’histoire, à l’architecture, à la technologie, à l’art, à la science, à la région et à ses habitants.
Cette action collective transcende l’usage normé de l’espace, en le fertilisant avec dévouement et conviction : Les valeurs universelles de la transformation et du changement.
The Humping Pact is the suspended act of love towards the environment. Developed during Diego Agullo’s and Dmitry Paranyushkin’s residency at PACT Zollverein in 2011, it is a tribute to dysfunctional spaces that still emanate creative potential. Our coming together is an attempt to build an intimate and personal relationship with space, being loyal to its demands and dedicated within our efforts.
Le « Humping Pact » est une déclaration d’amour à l’environnement. Développé pendant la résidence de Diego Agullo et Dmitry Paranyushkin au PACT Zollverein en 2011, il est un hommage aux espaces en déshérence, dont il émane toujours un potentiel de création. « Notre projet est une tentative de construction d’un rapport intime et personnel avec l’espace, en étant fidèle à ses demandes et dévoué dans nos efforts » (Dmitry Paranyushkin’s).
